One Community, One Purpose, One Great Day
Neighbours helped neighbours by collecting food donations door to door, purchasing extra food while doing their grocery shopping, bringing donations to many sites around the Region, holding bbqs, and special events like the DIG IN Battle of the Bands.
140,000 LBS FILLS INVENTORY GAP
The Food Bank collected over 70,000 lbs on Saturday at donation sites throughout the Region. An additional 70,000 lbs was raised in the days leading up to the event. This means that The Food Bank is in a good position to meet the growing needs of over 70 community food programs throughout the summer. “In the first year of operation The Food Bank distributed 75,000 lbs. To see the equivalent amount raised in one day is inspiring”, says Tim Jackson, President of The Food Bank of Waterloo Region’s Board of Directors.
“Our goal for today was not just about food collection – it was also about community engagement” says Food Bank Executive Director Wendi Campbell. “The spirit and commitment of this community to help their neighbours is amazing.” Over 500 volunteers canvassed neighbourhoods, handed out bags at grocery stores, staffed donation sites, helped with transportation logistics and organized special events today. “All of the excitement and activity today came together for one purpose and resulted in one great day for The Food Bank and those who rely upon us. This is one great community.”
